Humberto Peraza y Ojeda (1925-2016), was one of Mexico's foremost sculptors, exhibiting and honored throughout the world for art works ranging from his smaller classic bullfighting figures to monumental figures of historic figures gracing locations from the National Palace of Mexico City to bullrings throughout Mexico. This bull with a broken horn is numbered 1229 on his back and could probably be identified as one of Mexico's famous fighting toros. Beautifully interpreted in green patinated bronze, he is lovingly portrayed and finely cast with strong textural quality - from coat to majestic form. He sits atop a heavy black and white marble base. Figure is 7 inches long by 4 3/4 inches tall and 2 1/4 inches deep. With he base, the sculpture measures 9 3/4 inches tall b 7 1/2 inches wide.
It is signed PERAZA on the bronze base between the legs, and bears a brass plaque reading: Sculptor/HUMBERTO PERAZA/ Mexican. The underside also bears the original label from the Art Collector's Gallery, Hotel Maria Isabel, Mexico City, where this sculpture was purchased.
What is legible on label includes: " Galeria Arte de Coleccionistas, Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico 5, D.F. Mexico / No. 204/ Fecha: 2/XI/1975 / Titule: ...orito / Largo: 19 cms / ...ero Peraza"
Peraza's sculptures are considered national treasures in Mexico and have been exhibited throughout the world; he has been honored for his art from Ireland & England to LA in addition to institutions and museums throughout his home country. (See full biography on WikipediA.)
This is a beautiful interpretation of a handsome animal for a lover of the bullfighting art and Peraza was a major, much admired, exponent of this art form.
